The Certificate Course in Perioperative Nursing is jointly organised by the HKSH Institute for Innovation and Professional Development (IIPD) and the Hong Kong College of Perioperative Nursing (HKCPON).
Course Aims
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of perioperative nursing specialization. This course develops students' understanding of fundamental and advanced perioperative care, surgical and anaesthesia update, scope and standards of practice, and risk management in operating theatre. Major concepts and theoretical knowledge of guiding specialty practice will be provided to enable nurses to practice as competent perioperative nurses.
Course Objectives
On completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- Perform a pre-operative assessment and develop a care plan based on the patient's health status and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care;
- Utilize updated knowledge on various types of surgeries and advancements in anesthesia and peri-operative care;
- Address the psychosocial and educational needs of clients undergoing surgery;
- Establish a safe and efficient peri-operative environment to support successful surgical procedures;
- Participate in service improvement activities in the operating theatre;
- Identify high-risk aspects of peri-operative practice and implement measures to ensure the safety of clients and staff;
- Demonstrate accountability, flexibility, and effective communication skills when working in partnership with the operating theatre team and surgical team.

- Intraoperative ventilatory and circulatory management
- Preparation of anaesthesia equipment and items used in anaesthesia procedures
- Principles of blood administration/ fluid management
- Management of patients recovering from anaesthesia
- Post anaesthesia care of patients
- Transfer of critically patients

- Medication and gas safety in OT

Clinical Practicum (For enrolment full course only)
- A total of six weeks of clinical practicum in related specialty in an accredited training center approved by the Hong Kong College of Perioperative Nursing (HKCPON).
- The student from the clinical site without accredited by HKCPON, he/she is arranged to take 1-week clinical practicum at one of accredited clinical sites.

Assessment
1. Clinical Practicum Record
The performance of each candidate will be assessed on her/his selected clinical practicum. The clinical logbook provided may be in the form of continuous assessment. The assessment will be conducted by case management record in selected sub-specialty training.
2. Written Assessment
1. Examination to be held at the end of Module I (10%)- 1 hour
2. Examination- to be held at the end of Module III* (60%)- 3 hours
3. Reflective Discussion and Presentation (10%)
4. Case study (20%)
*The examination must be passed with a total score on the written assessment. A second attempt will be provided within one month after the first attempt.
Award
Upon completion of the following module(s), successful candidates will receive the following Certificate issued by IIPD and HKCPON:

Course Entrance Requirements
- For Module I, Registered Nurse with one-year clinical experience in Operating Theatre
- For Module II & III, Registered Nurse who had completed Module I successfully, and with more than two- year clinical experience in Operating Theatre
